I agree Shaneb. They should make it mandatory that p/t should take classes in a gym(i.e practice the techniques) every 6months or so. New technologies coming out often in connection with fitness. Having the first hand experience will give them a better understanding into the industry and working with their clients. Also they will be better equipped to give advice and train ppl.

Sounds like a business venture for someone who knows the in's and out's and all things involving training, a training seminar or school for personal trainers. With all the people on the boards that propose to know it all, this should be a gold mine. Since I know nothing or very little about training and gym etiquette, this leaves me out.

It would make it better for everyone the p/t would be better equiped and tha wannabee p/t that just do the course and no practical would not be around to give bad names to the good p/t and ya never know p/t could earn a bit better money on the way.
Its a little like tradesman and labours tradesman get paided alot more cause they have done the hard yards to get qualified while labours get paided less cause they rocked up on the job with no qualification

They are not required to have first hand experience. Get something online in 3weeks and suddenly you're an expert. I've seen too many times injury incurred while working with a trainer. It's a shame because you can be very successfull if you put effort into your training and is willing to always expand your education.

There's a lot of people going to IFA, taking an online quiz, pass by at least 70%, pay $99 and get certified in PT/Group Exercise. All this without ever opening a manual, doing a practical test or having any credentials.
I wanted to check it out and even though the manual is extensive, I took the quiz without ever looking at the manual, just used my experience knowledge and scored 94 on the test, which means I qualify for the certification, never paid the fee, so never certified from them.

P/T are a dime a dozen. It's unfortunate that you have to filter through some really horrible ones to find the exceptional trainer. Most ppl get discouraged because of this. And if they've had a bad experience, word of mouth will in this case do more harm to the business.

anytime,
you can even print off a copy of the test and mark it in before taking it for real, depends on how sure you're about some of the answers. I've been in a gym where all the trainers were IFA certified, found out they passed the answers around and everyone scored 100, didn't mean they knew what the hell they were doing, but with the IFA certification after the name, they were able to play the game and collect the money.
