I think not being around a lot of machines in my earlier days left me to predominantly free weights, I like rows with and underhand grip using the zig zag bar and wrist straps. do not use too much weight that you can't use good form. dumbell rows are excellent at building back thickness as well. these days i like to use a large variety, like 5-8 different exercises, the back is somewhat complex and i don't think can be fully developed with just one or two exercises. this is something i never liked about the HIT training, not enough movements

4 sets of t bar rows 4 sets of lat pull down 4 sets of rows 4 sets side lateral raises 4 sets reverse peck deck
for the finally i do as many close chin's as possible

I'm a big fan of cable rows and smith machine bent over rows. I like the smith for bent over rows because you can take the momentum out of the movement much more easily and lean into it so you can hit any part of your back you want and really feel it through the entire ROM.

Dead Lift Bent Over Rows, heavy with momentum - After that I take the exercises I feel like doing with lighter weights with full ROM and concentration. It's working for me so I stick with it

My back started growing after adding deadlifts every other week and old school t-bar (jamming an olympic bar in a corner and loading up plates). Use the seated cable row close grip handle to lift the bar. Another thing, like mind2muscle said, is Bent Over Rows. I do reverse grip and use about twice as much range of motion as you see on the pro's dvd Chin ups behind the neck pulldowns reverse grip bb row deadlifts or t-bar row Probably not the optimal routine, but my back IS growing and taking shape. Oh...higher test levels helps too hehehe
